About the Parish

A Living Parish in a Place of Deep History

Set within the historic grounds of Buckden Towers, the Parish of St Hugh of Lincoln continues a tradition of prayer and hospitality that stretches back centuries. Once a residence of the Bishops of Lincoln, this place has long been associated with faith, service, and community life.

Located within the Towers themselves, the parish serves not only Buckden but also the surrounding villages, drawing together a wide and diverse community rooted in this part of Cambridgeshire.

The parish is in the care of the Claretian Missionaries, whose mission is to share the Gospel through pastoral care, hospitality, and service. Their presence at Buckden Towers reflects a commitment to creating a place where faith is nurtured, people are welcomed, and the needs of both the local community and visitors are held together.

In 2026 the Claretian Missionaries celebrate 70 years of being present at Buckden Towers. Use this link to see some of Buckden Tower’s recent History: 70 years of The Claretians

Life of the Parish

Parish life at St Hugh’s is centred on the Eucharist and extends into a warm and welcoming community. After the 10:00am Sunday Mass, many gather for tea and conversation—an opportunity to meet others and share in the life of the parish.

Children and families are an important part of our community, with opportunities for faith formation and involvement throughout the year. The parish is also connected to the wider life of Buckden Towers, including local events, community activities, and the work of the Claret Centre.

A Space for Prayer and Reflection

“Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19; 2:51)
At the heart of the Christian life is the call to pause, reflect, and listen. Mary’s quiet pondering of the events of her life offers a model of faith that is attentive, thoughtful, and open to God’s presence.

Quote for the Day:

“We must learn to regard people less in light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Where can suffering become solidarity rather than isolation? (Hold it for 60 seconds.)

Our Team

Clergy & Pastoral Care

The parish is served by the Claretian Missionaries, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Claret, whose mission is to share the Gospel through preaching, pastoral care, and building communities of faith. Their presence at Buckden Towers reflects a commitment not only to parish life, but to fostering deeper reflection on God’s Word, encouraging each person’s sense of vocation, and promoting a spirit of welcome, service, and social responsibility. Through their ministry, the clergy seek to accompany people in their everyday lives, helping faith to be lived in a way that is thoughtful, compassionate, and rooted in the needs of the world today.

Supported by catechists, pastoral ministers, and volunteers.

Safeguarding & Health and Safety

The Claretian Missionaries are committed to safeguarding children, young people, and adults at risk. They are also committed to supporting those who may have experienced abuse in Church situations. one service they support is ‘Safe Spaces‘ an independent and confidential support service.

Safeguarding policies and procedures are in place to ensure a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all who participate in parish life.

The Claretian Missionaries work in collaboration with the Religious Life Safeguarding Service (RLSS) for dealing with all safeguarding matters.
