Environment & Sustainability

At Buckden Towers, we are committed to caring for this special place in a way that honours both its historic significance and its natural environment. As a site shaped by centuries of human activity, faith, and landscape management, we recognise our responsibility to steward it thoughtfully for future generations.

We want to reduce our environmental impact while preserving the character and integrity that make Buckden Towers unique. This means exploring ways to balance conservation of historic buildings with sustainable practices that support both people and nature.

Like many historic estates, Buckden Towers has an environmental footprint. The energy required to heat and maintain historic buildings, the management of water across the site, and the care of the grounds all have environmental implications.

Acknowledging this is an important first step. It allows us to begin asking how we can do things differently—more efficiently, more sustainably, and with greater sensitivity to the natural systems that surround us.

Many aspects of how Buckden Towers is currently managed already support sustainability.

Our approach prioritises repair and maintenance over replacement, helping to preserve historic fabric while reducing waste. Long-term planning guides decision-making, and careful management of the grounds supports existing habitats and biodiversity.

These practices form a strong foundation on which we can build further environmental improvements.

We are now beginning to explore how Buckden Towers could go further—both in reducing its carbon footprint and in enhancing the natural environment across the estate.

This may include:

  • Undertaking ecological surveys to better understand and protect habitats
  • Exploring opportunities for habitat restoration, such as meadows, orchards, woodland and ponds
  • Investigating energy audits and options to improve efficiency within historic buildings
  • Considering carefully designed, sensitive renewable energy solutions
  • Developing long-term land management approaches that increase biodiversity and carbon storage

We are also interested in the potential for initiatives such as Biodiversity Net Gain and habitat banking, which could help secure long-term funding for conservation and landscape enhancement.

At this stage, these are ideas we are actively exploring rather than confirmed plans—but they represent an exciting opportunity to shape a more resilient and sustainable future for the estate.

We know that achieving this vision will require knowledge, collaboration and support.

We are therefore keen to connect with:

  • Environmental and ecological specialists
  • Heritage and sustainability advisors
  • Funders and grant-making organisations
  • Local partners, volunteers and community groups

If you have expertise, ideas, or would like to support this work, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Together, we can explore how Buckden Towers can become a place where heritage, sustainability and nature flourish side by side.
