There is something truly special about experiencing Shakespeare beneath an open sky, surrounded by the beauty and history of Buckden Towers.
This summer we were delighted to welcome audiences to another wonderful outdoor performance, as the historic grounds were transformed into a unique theatre setting. Families, friends and visitors gathered together with picnic blankets and chairs, enjoying an evening where great storytelling met the timeless atmosphere of one of Cambridgeshire’s most distinctive heritage sites.
This year’s production of The Comedy of Errors delighted audiences with its lively performances, infectious humour and imaginative use of the stunning Knot Garden at Buckden Towers. The production received an excellent review from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), which praised the beautiful setting of the historic walls and gardens, the skilful direction by James Barwise and the outstanding performances of the cast. Particular praise was given to the convincing portrayal of the two sets of twins, with the reviewer commenting that the performances quickly made the audience believe they really were identical, allowing Shakespeare’s wonderfully chaotic comedy of mistaken identity to unfold with energy, warmth and laughter. It was a fitting reminder of how outdoor theatre, performed in such a remarkable historic setting, creates an experience that is every bit as memorable as the play itself.
Before the performance, many visitors took the opportunity to stroll through the beautiful gardens and grounds, discovering peaceful corners, mature trees and views of the historic buildings that have welcomed pilgrims, travellers and visitors for centuries. The setting itself became part of the experience, offering a chance to relax, reflect and enjoy the tranquillity of Buckden Towers before the curtain rose.
The evening was complemented by refreshments available on site, allowing guests to enjoy a drink, an ice cream or light refreshments while spending time with family and friends. The relaxed atmosphere created the feeling of a traditional summer gathering, where conversation, laughter and community were every bit as important as the performance itself.
As daylight faded and the stage came alive, Shakespeare’s words found a fitting home amongst the ancient walls and gardens. Outdoor theatre has a unique way of bringing audiences closer to the action, and once again the performers captivated everyone with an energetic and engaging production.
Events such as these reflect our vision for Buckden Towers as a place where history, culture and community come together. Alongside our programme of worship, retreats and community activities, we are delighted to open our grounds for performances that bring people of all ages together and introduce new visitors to this remarkable place.
