Shakespeare at the Towers – The Comedy of Errors

Each summer, the historic grounds of Buckden Towers are transformed into a living stage, as Shakespeare at the Towersbrings open-air theatre to life in one of the most atmospheric settings in the region.

Set against the backdrop of ancient walls and surrounded by beautifully kept gardens, the experience begins well before the first line is spoken. Visitors are invited to arrive early, wander the grounds, and settle into the evening, creating a sense of occasion that feels as much like a garden gathering as a theatre performance.

Food and refreshments form an essential part of the experience. From around early evening, food is available on site, with a variety of options—from hot meals and bar service to lighter refreshments—allowing guests to dine informally before the performance begins.
There is a distinctive sense of a summer evening “garden party” atmosphere, with audiences enjoying food, conversation, and the setting as the light begins to soften.

As dusk falls, attention gently turns toward the stage. Performances are delivered by an award-winning company, known for their accessible, high-quality productions that bring Shakespeare vividly to life.
The combination of skilled performance, thoughtful staging, and the natural surroundings creates a theatrical experience that feels both intimate and expansive.

Throughout the evening, the grounds themselves become part of the production—the fading light, the silhouettes of the Towers, and the shared presence of the audience all contributing to something that is more than simply a play. It is an event:

  • a social evening out
  • a cultural experience in a historic setting
  • and a chance to enjoy theatre in a way that feels relaxed, welcoming, and memorable

With space to gather, quality food and drink available, and the unique character of Buckden Towers as its backdrop, Shakespeare at the Towers offers a distinctive blend of heritage, hospitality, and performance—an evening to savour from arrival to final applause.
