Our Dream for the Buildings & Grounds

Buckden Towers stands as a remarkable meeting point of heritage and nature — a place where history, faith and landscape have been interwoven for centuries. Our hope for the future is that the Towers will not only preserve the past, but actively model a more sustainable way forward.

We envisage Buckden Towers becoming a beacon of low-carbon stewardship: reducing its operational footprint while enhancing the resilience of its historic estate. Through sensitive energy efficiency improvements to historic buildings, renewable energy generation where appropriate, and careful land management that increases carbon sequestration, the estate can play a meaningful role in responding to the climate crisis. Woodland enhancement, meadow restoration and orchard revival would not only support biodiversity but also capture and store carbon naturally, making the landscape itself part of the solution.

In time, we hope Buckden Towers can demonstrate how heritage estates can transition responsibly — balancing conservation of historic fabric with modern sustainability practice. Visitors would not only experience a place of peace and reflection, but also witness practical examples of climate-conscious land stewardship. Education, interpretation and community engagement could ensure that the Towers inspire others to take similar steps in their own homes, parishes and landscapes.

Buckden Towers sits within a rich mosaic of woodland, meadow, orchard and pond habitats across its 14 acres. Our aspiration is to strengthen and restore this ecological tapestry so that wildlife flourishes alongside people.

We hope to enhance species-rich grassland through careful meadow management and green hay spreading, restore traditional orchards with heritage fruit varieties, improve woodland structure through sympathetic thinning and ride creation, and enhance pond and wetland habitats for amphibians, invertebrates and birds. Deadwood habitats, hedgerow management and pollinator-friendly planting would further increase ecological resilience.

Looking ahead, we would like to explore the possibility of the estate evolving into a managed Habitat Bank that secures long-term funding for nature recovery through Biodiversity Net Gain and complementary environmental grants. This approach would ensure that conservation is not short-term or piecemeal, but secured for at least 30 years through structured management and monitoring. Revenue generated could sustain ongoing habitat work, volunteer programmes and environmental education, embedding conservation into the life of the community.

Most importantly, our dream is that Buckden Towers becomes a place where heritage and habitat thrive together — where visitors walk through thriving meadows, restored orchards and vibrant woodland knowing that the land is being actively protected for future generations. In doing so, the estate would align with local nature recovery priorities while strengthening its role as a sanctuary for both people and wildlife.

At Buckden Towers, we are committed to continually improving accessibility and fostering an environment where all visitors feel welcome and included. As custodians of a historic site, we recognise both the opportunities and the challenges that come with opening heritage buildings and grounds to a wide and diverse community.

Over the years, thoughtful steps have been taken to make the Towers more accessible while respecting their historic character. These include the adaptation of facilities to support residential stays and group visits, the provision of step-free access in key areas, and the development of welcoming spaces for people of all backgrounds—whether visiting for events, quiet reflection, or simply to explore the grounds.

This commitment is ongoing. We continue to look for ways to improve physical access, enhance visitor information, and ensure that Buckden Towers can be experienced as fully as possible by everyone, regardless of age, ability, or background. Our aim is not only to preserve the heritage of the site, but to ensure it can be shared meaningfully and comfortably with all who come here.

By balancing careful conservation with thoughtful adaptation, Buckden Towers seeks to remain both historically significant and openly accessible—an inclusive place where everyone can feel a sense of welcome and belonging.
